Don't expect anything amazing (I don't) but I have been working on making a velociraptor mask for myself. If I like it enough I might wear it to the local con whenever it comes around (and fall on my face because raptor mask + big crowd in a tight space = bad idea).

I am making it in about three layers. Layer one is cardboard taped together using packing tape. The second layer is paper mache and the third layer is this awesome air drying clay. When I was very young I went to a pottery class for a while and then a few years ago I made that clay reindeer in my 'other crafts folder'. Well, in both the pottery class and when making the reindeer I had to worry about my art warping after it was fired in a kiln or in the oven. NOT ANYMORE!!! I really don't ever want to use regular clay again after using this stuff.

I don't have any fancy sculpting tools nor do I really remember/know how to get things looking nice and smooth so my mask is lumpy looking. If I were making some other kind of creature that might not be good. Because this is a dinosaur I am thinking the texture will look good and it won't look as if I have no idea how to sculpt.

I need to figure out a secure way to hold it onto my head. This thing is getting a little heavy with the clay. I am seriously jealous of the people who have the knowledge and materials to make resin casts to create things like this. I am just a noob who got bored recently and wanted to do some sort of art project other than drawing. I have always loved dinosaurs. Also, I am still disappointed from that time many years ago when I saw an awesome raptor mask in a magazine and wanted it sooo badly and my mom said no.tears
--------
So right now most of the mask has been covered in clay so that is good. I still need to make the eyes which will be fun. My mom makes dicrotic glass jewelry and sculptures and we have two kilns for firing glass so I can make my own sparkly custom eyes! If all else looks cheesy, at least the eyes will look good! shifty eyes
--------
My inspiration for this project comes from two deviants mainly...I doubt this mask will look anywhere as cool as their creations have turned out:
This one by un-do blows me away!!! Make sure you follow the youtube link she gives to see the tail and mouth in action! The tail is super amazing!
Renegade by un-do

This one is done by a different deviant, Nambroth, yet they used a resin blank from un-do for the face. Unfortunately I don't think un-do is selling these raptor resin blanks. Nambroth did a great job with the mask and I love the fabric and everything. She has created many more amazing masks that you can check out.
Kinglet, the 'raptor' Mask by Nambroth

Alright well stay tuned even if my mask is a failure I am going to submit a photo of it once it is done.

I am obsessed with peafowl. That basically sums up part of me lol. I breed and raise peafowl so I love all of their noises and pretty feathers.

I also love plants. I love tropical plants the most...Things like tree ferns, cannas, bananas, helliconia, shell ginger, elephant ears, bamboo, etc. I like gardening but my garden isn't super spectacular. XD

I have been drawing since I was really little and have stuck with it. I don't draw every day but I do draw enough not to get worse but better. I don't know what I like to draw the most. I like to draw a lot of different things and probably go through phases where I like to draw certain things.

My boyfriend is amazing and he is not only my boyfriend, but my best friend. I met him in art class and I am very happy that he is an artist so it is supper fun to talk about art with him.

Ah yes I have spoken to Friedrich Esser. He is very nice. I can't view that page since I am not on facebook but I am sure he has wonderful photos on there. He travels around to document and photograph wild green peafowl. He has 2 nice websites and he lives in Thailand breeding Indo-Chinese peafowl that are from wild caught birds.
